Rameshwar Nath Kao or R.N. Kao, was a spymaster for the Indian government and the founding father of India's Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). Born in 1918, Kao had a long and winding career in India's intelligence force and proved to be one of the best in India's history. A bright man who in this early years, extended his education to become, somewhat, the ultimate expert in security. Although, a very private man, there is some information that gives us an insight to the man known as Rameshwar Nath Kao. On the 10th of May, 1918, Rameshwar Nath Kao was born in Varanas, Uttar Pradesh. Brought up by his uncle Pandit Triloki Nath Kao, who encouraged him into education. Kao managed not only to study a Bachelor of Arts at Lucknow University but also a Masters Degree in English Literature and some classes of Law at Allahabad University. In the 1940s, Kao left university to join the Indian Imperial Police, his first posting was at a place called Kanpur where he worked as an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
His massive career was party responsible for securing India's political national security. He has held the position of Secretary in Cabinet for the government of India, which was named rn gov . The Chief of personal security to Prime Minister Nehru, a security adviser for Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and then Rajiv Gandi. In the 1950s he helped Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah set up security and intelligence in Ghana. The highlight of Kao's career would be the time and effort he put into India's Research and Analysis Wing. This organization occurred after intelligence on India's behalf failed during the Sino-Indian War. A time when real life foreign information was urgently needed for Indian politics, the R&AW secured this information for India.
This career came to a slow end, retiring quietly after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's political party lost to the Janata Party in 1977. In 1980 he returned briefly as the security advisor once again, for Prime Minister Indira and Rajiv Gandhi. Most of Rameshwar Nath Kao's life is a mystery, when he did actually retire fully, he hid from the public eye and said nothing, assuming that he knew too much to write about it or to speak in public. In his life, it is claimed he has only been photographed twice, as he was a notoriously private man. Recently, in January, 2002 at age 84 Rameshwar Nath Kao passed away. But not without leaving his home India with the national security to protect herself and it marked the end of rn gov. |
